Will Smith achieved his first national event victory at the IHRA Outlaw Nitro event, driving the Samsel Family’s injected-nitro dragster to the Top Alcohol Dragster title. This milestone marks a significant point in his career as he has been working through the ranks for years, thanks to mentorship from the late Bill Mullins. After beginning the season in Columbus, Ohio, this win brought him immense joy, as he noted, “This has been a long journey… when you surround yourself with good people, you’re bound to succeed.”

Smith expressed gratitude to the Samsel family for their support and shared that he aimed for victory from the outset. He has competed with the same dragster previously driven by Jamie Noonan and celebrated the car’s familiarity. Winning felt surreal to Smith, who recounted a motivational sign in his living room reminding him to persevere.

He candidly addressed the financial hurdles of drag racing, emphasizing the need to give it his all whenever opportunities arise. Reflecting on Mullins, he wishes he could share this achievement with him. Smith’s experience driving different types of cars has provided valuable insights, enabling him to absorb lessons from each run. After his victory, he returned to work as the marketing director for the Professional Drag Racing Association, enjoying support and congratulations from colleagues and childhood heroes. Despite celebrating his win, he remains focused on his responsibilities in the sport he loves.
