The focus of recent news in the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) has been on penalties against Elite Motorsports and racer Erica Enders. This weekend’s NHRA Virginia Nationals in Richmond may shift the conversation toward performance discrepancies among Pro Stock racers. There’s growing concern regarding the use of outdated tires, specifically those manufactured eight years ago, in comparison to current spec tires. While technically legal, these older tires are claimed to offer a performance edge of up to .03 seconds.

Drivers allege that changes after the COVID-19 shutdown have compromised the current Goodyear tires, although the manufacturer disputes this. NHRA is reportedly investigating these issues, with potential actions anticipated after the Richmond event. Concerns are rising over the integrity of competition; one driver pointed out that no rules were meant for teams to hoard tires over such extensive periods.

Racers express frustration, with some stating they may withdraw their teams if the situation remains unaddressed. They also argue that significant differences exist in tire construction, which affects performance. As a potential solution, the NHRA might consider adopting NASCAR’s approach, distributing tires at each event. This would ensure a more level playing field, especially given the critical role tires play at speeds exceeding 210 mph, compared to the biennial inspections of safety equipment like seatbelts.
