From 1962 to 1971, the Indy Top Fuel finals were dominated by renowned racers like Don Garlits and Don Prudhomme, who appeared in finals every year except 1966. However, the following decade saw a shift, with nearly half of the winners being first-time NHRA event champions, such as Gary Beck and Marvin Graham. In 1980, driver Capp achieved a remarkable victory in Indy using a new chassis design from Al Swindahl. Despite rain pushing the final round to Tuesday and a theft from their pits, the team celebrated their significant win. During this event, Capp qualified behind Graham, whose impressive run of 5.68 seconds was the best since 1975. Capp, maintaining consistent performance in 5.80s, eliminated three successive NHRA world champions, eventually winning the final against Jeb Allen. The subsequent year introduced reaction timers and reduced the competition size, as rising costs impacted the sport. Shirley Muldowney, a trailblazer in the field, reflected on the significance of her 1982 title, while recalling her impressive 1975 race where she triumphed against several formidable opponents, including reigning champion Beck. Her striking presence in the finals prompted Garlits to famously acknowledge her achievement, highlighting a pivotal moment for women in drag racing.
