Rockingham Dragway will host an NHRA national event in 2026, marking its first full-fledged entry into the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. Scheduled for September 25–27, 2026, the race will fill a crucial Countdown to the Championship slot previously occupied by zMAX Dragway. This historic venue in North Carolina, known as “The Rock,” has a long heritage in drag racing, hosting significant events since the 1960s.

Recent upgrades by new owners Dan VanHorn and Al Gennarelli have prepared the dragway for this major event. Their three-year renovation has modernized the facility while preserving its rich history. Enhancements include new concrete grandstands, relocated fencing, and expanded access for racers and emergency services, all designed to boost safety and improve the racer experience.

The return of Rockingham is particularly significant in NHRA’s 75th anniversary season, reinforcing the sport’s Southern roots. Rockingham is expected to deliver exciting, competitive conditions for racers, as emphasized by Pro Stock champion Greg Anderson, who regards it fondly as his home track.

This revival not only serves to unite the racing community but also draws from strong local government and business support, creating a promising future for the facility. The event represents a broader NHRA strategy to renew interest in drag racing across the Southeastern U.S. As preparations continue, the owners express commitment to building on this momentum, aiming for a lasting presence in the racing circuit.
