Three-time Funny Car world champion Ron Capps kicked off the 2026 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series with a strong performance, securing the No. 1 qualifying position at the NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway. He clocked a standout run of 3.890 seconds at 334.07 mph, making it the fastest in his Funny Car category and securing his 38th career No. 1 qualifier. Despite unfavorable warm and humid conditions, this achievement was a significant boost for Capps’ team, who had been regrouping after a disappointing previous season.

Capps credited his crew chief, Dean “Guido” Antonelli, and the team for their hard work in the offseason. They focused on data collection during Saturday’s sessions to prepare for the elimination rounds. Capps expressed optimism about the next day’s conditions, anticipating faster runs.

Additionally, he announced a partnership with Monster Energy and debuted as a multi-car team owner with rookie Maddi Gordon driving a Top Fuel dragster. Gordon qualified 15th in her professional debut, earning praise for her talent and smooth driving style from Capps.

On Sunday morning, Capps is set to race No. 16 qualifier John Smith in the elimination rounds, aiming for his fifth victory at Gainesville and the first diamond Wally trophy of NHRA’s 75th anniversary season. The event starts at 10 a.m. ET, and Capps hopes to add to his impressive record of seven final round appearances at this historic venue.
