North Carolina’s racetracks have achieved a significant victory with the passage of House Bill 926, which protects them from nuisance complaints. The law, endorsed by Governor Josh Stein and championed by Rep. Allen Chesser, includes a provision called Protect the Right to Race. This aims to shield established racetracks from complaints regarding noise and disturbances from residents or developers moving into nearby areas after the tracks have already been operating. Such complaints have led to the closure of numerous tracks nationwide.

Industry leaders celebrated its passage, emphasizing its importance for preserving North Carolina’s rich motorsports heritage. Michael Good, president of Performance Racing Industry, noted the state’s unique racing spirit and recognized Governor Stein’s support as pivotal to its future. The bill not only safeguards local tracks but also strengthens the state’s economy, which generates $3.82 billion annually, supports nearly 20,000 jobs, and contributes over $1.35 billion in wages.

The law is seen as a critical defense for small-business owners managing local racetracks and car enthusiasts organizing events, ensuring the continuation of North Carolina’s significant contribution to American car culture. By protecting these facilities from opportunistic complaints, House Bill 926 secures a vital component of the motorsports industry, which has a broader economic impact of $69 billion across the nation. This legislation is a decisive step toward preserving the legacy of racing in North Carolina.
