Nitro engines, such as those in Funny Car and Top Fuel, require immense amounts of fuel, significantly outpacing typical muscle cars. For example, standard pump gas engines utilize fuel pumps that flow around 35 gallons per hour, while nitro engines demand fuel pumps that move at least 120 gallons per minute. This high consumption is due to the unique burning properties of nitromethane.

Nitro engine fuel pumps are mechanical and driven by the camshaft.
