Veteran NHRA Funny Car driver Phil Burkart is making a comeback to nitro competition, joining Dana Hard’s “Hard Guys” Mustang-bodied Nitro Funny Car team for the 2025 NHRA season. Burkart, who has been a competitor in the nitro ranks since 1998 and boasts four NHRA national event wins, brings valuable experience and enthusiasm to the Hard Guys camp. Team owner Dana Hard is known for his top-tier equipment and commitment to racing, emphasizing a focus on performance and competitiveness.

Burkart expressed excitement about his return, stating, “I’ve had the itch to get back in a nitro flopper… this is the right fit.” He and Hard share a common goal: to be competitive and enjoy the process of racing. Hard echoed Burkart’s sentiments, calling him the “perfect fit” due to his extensive experience and ability to handle the car effectively.

Joining Burkart is Virginia native Jay Lewis, appointed as co-crew chief to support head tuner Mike Smith after a successful stint at last year’s Maple Grove national event. The 2025 season for the Hard Guys Nitro Funny Car will kick off at the NHRA New England Nationals, with plans to participate in four additional NHRA national events.
