Black had a profound impact on both drag racing and the lives of those around him. Known for his signature cowboy hat, he was admired as a leader and businessman, encouraging others to pursue their dreams. His passion for racing began in high school, and he won his first race in 1964 at Stardust International Raceway with his Chevy II Nova SS.
In addition to racing, Black, alongside his wife Judy, established a successful construction business, Vegas General Construction. He partnered with George Marnell in the 1990s to enter Pro Stock racing, and the team’s success included a significant victory in 2001 when Anderson drove their car to win the U.S. Nationals.
In 2002, Black appointed Anderson as the crew chief to lead the next chapter of success, culminating in 10 world championships and 205 Pro Stock victories. Anderson expressed deep gratitude, noting that Black was instrumental in helping him achieve his dreams.
Following the 2022 season, Black retired from ownership, ensuring the team’s continuity. His legacy endures in both the racing program and the lives he influenced. Ken Black will be remembered fondly as a dedicated coach and mentor.
