The NHRA is boosting its 75th anniversary season by adding a notable event to its 2026 schedule: the inaugural NHRA Great Lakes Nationals at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan, from September 18–20. This race marks a significant addition as it will kick off the Countdown to the Championship playoffs, the critical sequence deciding the NHRA world championships with six races. U.S. 131 Motorsports Park, renowned as “The Fastest Track in Michigan,” will be one of four new venues hosting national events that season.

For the Peterson family, who have operated the facility for over two decades, hosting an NHRA national event has been a longstanding ambition. Jason Peterson expressed their commitment to excellence and entertainment, emphasizing the event’s importance to the racing community in the region. The Great Lakes Nationals will contribute to reshaping the Countdown, as the first two playoff races will take place at new venues, enhancing competition dynamics and strategies for teams.

NHRA President Glen Cromwell highlighted the significance of this addition, viewing it as both a celebration of the sport’s history and a commitment to its future growth. He noted that the track’s enthusiasm to host the event makes it an excellent addition to the national tour. With high stakes, a fresh venue, and passionate Midwest fans, the inaugural NHRA Great Lakes Nationals is expected to be a landmark event in 2026. Tickets go on sale February 1.
