This performance could mark his fourth No. 1 qualification in six events this season. Teammate J.R. Todd led the Funny Car category with a solid run of 3.982 seconds at 326.71 mph, aiming for his first No. 1 spot of the year after a slow start. Angie Smith took the provisional top position in Pro Stock Motorcycle, clocking a 6.797 at 199.29, becoming the only rider to break into the 6.70s during the single qualifying run allowed due to wind conditions.
