Rookie Pro Stock driver Matt Latino is stepping in for his father, Eric Latino, at the NHRA Northwest Nationals this weekend while Eric recovers from recent eye surgery. This will mark another significant moment in Matt’s self-funded debut season, as he aims to maintain his father’s championship hopes. Matt emphasized his commitment to self-sufficiency, stating he only wanted to race if he could support himself through sponsorship. He has secured funding from brands like PowerEdge, Ace Race Parts, GESI, and Clean Diesel Specialists.

Despite challenges, including Eric’s complications from surgery, Matt has exceeded his expectations this season, competing in five races with plans for at least five more. He currently holds 16th place in Pro Stock standings, with four round wins to his credit. While some have suggested he pursue Rookie of the Year honors, Matt prioritizes gaining experience and helping his father maintain his competitive standing, as Eric currently ranks fifth despite missing two races this season due to knee surgery.

Looking ahead, Matt aims to compete in the full national event schedule in 2026, a milestone he finds exciting. The NHRA Northwest Nationals will start Friday at Pacific Raceways, with final eliminations on Sunday, after which he will also race in next week’s NHRA Sonoma Nationals.
