Veteran nitro racer Kyle Hough experienced a serious crash during the annual Fuel Altered Chaos event at Tucson Dragway on Saturday. While driving the Sheepherder Fuel Altered, Hough lost control of the vehicle, causing it to spin sideways, hit the wall, and roll onto its side against a concrete guardrail. Despite the violent impact, which led to a steering crossbar detachment, safety personnel promptly reached the scene to assist Hough.

In a hospital statement, Hough recalled limited details of the incident but vividly remembered the moment of collision and the subsequent upside-down position of the car. His legs were exposed outside the cockpit during the crash, resulting in severe injuries before the vehicle came to a stop, trapping him upside down.

Hough expressed gratitude to the Tucson Dragway safety team, fellow racers, and family for their support during his ordeal. After being transported to a trauma center, he underwent scans and emergency surgery. Fortunately, while he sustained deep lacerations and severe burns requiring multiple surgeries and skin grafts, doctors confirmed he had avoided broken bones and major spinal injuries.

Describing one of his injuries as resembling a shark bite, Hough maintained a positive outlook amid the severity of his situation. He emphasized appreciation for his safety equipment, noting that he is grateful to be alive. Although he faces a long recovery process, Hough stated, “We’ll take it one day at a time.”
