Forrest Lucas, the influential founder of Lucas Oil and a prominent figure in motorsports, has passed away at the age of 83. Born in 1942 in Ramsey, Indiana, Lucas began his career as a truck driver and mechanic, ultimately creating a successful business empire in automotive lubricants and fuel treatments. Together with his wife, Charlotte, he established Lucas Oil in 1989, which became a leading brand due to the effectiveness of its products. Lucas famously stated, “Building a brand isn’t easy or cheap, but once people tried the product and realized it worked, we had a customer for life.”

Beyond business, Lucas impacted the racing community significantly. In 2004, he transformed a dirt track in Missouri into Lucas Oil Speedway, a premier entertainment complex featuring various motorsport facilities. He was a key sponsor of numerous racing teams and events, supporting grassroots and professional motorsports alike. His legacy is marked by sponsorships, such as the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. Recognized for his contributions, Lucas was awarded the NHRA Lifetime Achievement Award in August 2024. NHRA President Glen Cromwell praised him as a visionary who elevated the sport of racing, impacting both its grassroots and professional levels. The Lucas Oil brand and Forrest Lucas’s spirit will continue to inspire many within the motorsport community.
