A dry sump oil system, consisting of an oil pan, pump, tank, drive, and plumbing, offers crucial advantages for motorsport engines over a factory wet sump system. The wet sump system, while suitable for everyday vehicles, is limited in high-performance situations. When braking hard, oil can shift away from the pickup, risking air entry into the system and leading to oil starvation and engine damage. Jim Bianca from Moroso Performance Products highlights that this risk is exacerbated by “windage”—the oil’s movement caused by the crankshaft at high RPMs, which can also diminish lubrication.

In contrast, a dry sump system employs multiple pickups in a shallow pan, ensuring efficient oil retrieval regardless of movement. This design minimizes the chance of losing oil prime and manages crankcase air better, improving lubrication. The setup involves selecting adequate pickups and pump stages that match engine requirements while adhering to competition rules. The dry sump pump is typically driven by the crankshaft and is more effective at scavenging oil and managing pressure than wet sump pumps.

These systems also require careful planning regarding oil lines and tank placement to optimize capacity and cooling. Properly configured, a dry sump system enhances engine reliability during racing, allowing drivers to perform confidently under stress. This reliability, combined with potential horsepower gains from reduced windage, makes dry sump systems essential in competitive motorsports.
