Trevor Fuqua, an avid small-tire racer from Fordsville, Kentucky, faced a devastating setback when his newly built 1967 Camaro was destroyed in a crash just a day after taking delivery. After two and a half years of dedication, Fuqua, alongside brothers Adam and Isaac Preston of NEXT Motorsports, built the car for no-prep and radial-tire racing, aiming to break LS hydraulic roller cam records. A well-equipped vehicle, featuring a BES 427-inch LS engine and precision turbo setup, met a tragic fate during its shakedown runs at U.S. 60 Dragway.

On the second pass, Fuqua encountered “new car blues,” leading to a series of misfortunes. Attempting to address a wheelie issue mid-run, he misjudged the effects of a headwind, propelling the car into the air and resulting in a crash against a light pole and fence. Remarkably, Fuqua emerged bruised but uninjured while the car was left in ruins.

Assessing the damage, he discovered that while the chassis suffered significant harm, some components, like the motor and turbo system, remained intact. Friends and family rallied behind Fuqua in this challenging time, offering support for repairs and rebuilds. Despite the heartache, his determination and gratitude for the community’s help shine through as he expresses optimism about potentially rebuilding the car by fall. This dream project, deeply supported by his family, became a symbol of resilience amidst racing’s inherent risks.
