Handing car keys to a teenager can be daunting for parents, particularly due to concerns about speed, other drivers, and smartphone distractions. To tackle this issue during Teen Driving Awareness Month, a collaboration has formed between Doug Herbert’s B.R.A.K.E.S. teen driver training program, Nationwide, and NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. They are launching the Focused Driving Rewards safety program aimed specifically at reducing phone use while driving.

Founded by Herbert after a personal tragedy, B.R.A.K.E.S. emphasizes proactive driving skills through hands-on training. The campaign’s footage features a parent and teen learning vehicle control, showcasing that driving skills are cultivated through experience. The program’s core objective is to combat the temptation of phone notifications, especially among young drivers.

The app-based initiative allows users to drive without handling their phones, earning points for safe driving, which can be redeemed for gift cards up to $60 every six months. Importantly, signing up doesn’t require a Nationwide policy.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has highlighted the importance of leading by example as a parent, noting that children often mimic their parents’ habits behind the wheel. This partnership not only provides families a means to track and reward safe driving habits but also transforms the conversation around phone use into a more engaging experience. As Teen Driving Awareness Month progresses, this initiative aims to ensure safer roads for teenagers and their families.
