ICU Racing

Bandimere, familiar with speed from his time at the Frank Hawley Drag Racing School, faced a unique experience during a ride with Dixon in a Top Fuel car. Rigged tightly into the vehicle with gloves, he felt a wave of relief at not being claustrophobic. Prior to the ride, he endured a 45-minute wait due to a crash in the previous run group, which amplified his nerves. Having witnessed countless Top Fuel races before, the lengthy delay led to intense contemplation about the impending ride.

Dixon allowed Bandimere to participate in a pre-run ritual, involving climbing into the car during engine warmup—a tradition from Dixon’s late tuner, Dick LaHaie. The moment the throttle was stabbed gave Bandimere a thrilling taste of the immense horsepower. The preparation that followed included donning full fireproof gear, which limited his movement and evoked thoughts about emergency exits. Bandimere realized that if anything went wrong, his ability to escape would be compromised, deepening his respect for professional racers.

Once the car launched and the parachutes deployed, the rapid pace of events left Bandimere in awe. He reflected on the indescribable speed and exhilaration, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to experience such an adrenaline-pumping ride. Overall, it deepened his appreciation for the challenges faced by drag racers.
