Melanie Johnson’s deep-seated desire to drive a Top Alcohol Dragster stems from her childhood, where she observed the thrilling world of drag racing from her father Alan Johnson’s pit. Growing up in a racing family, Johnson faced a tragic shadow when her uncle Blaine Johnson died in an accident just before her birth. This tragedy made her parents hesitant about her pursuing racing. Despite her initial denial, the pull of the sport was undeniable.

After channeling her competitive spirit into sports during college, Johnson began working in marketing for drag racers, which reignited her passion for racing. A pivotal moment came when she expressed her interest in getting behind the wheel, leading her father to support her pursuit of racing. With guidance from her team and support from her parents, she licensed in Super Comp before transitioning to a Top Alcohol Dragster.

Her racing career gained momentum, highlighted by a spectacular performance in her first season where she set personal bests, including a remarkable 5.17 seconds at 279 mph in Gainesville. Johnson’s notable victories included her first win at Summit Motorsports Park and a close race at the prestigious U.S. Nationals, where she impressed despite narrowly losing in the semifinals.

Now entrenched with McPhillips Racing, Johnson aims to win championships, cherishing the opportunity to honor her family’s legacy while making her mark in the sport.
